Coral Sul FLNG

Coral Sul FLNG – Rovuma Basin, Mozambique

The Coral Sul FLNG platform, 50 km off Palma (Cabo Delgado), is the world's only ultra-deepwater floating LNG facility. It employs 300+ Mozambicans, many trained abroad in LNG processing.

  • Start of production: June 2022; first shipment in Nov 2022.

  • Output so far: 8 Mt LNG + 0.5 Mt condensates; ~110 shipments (1 per week).

  • Capacity: 3.7 Mtpa.

  • Buyer: BP, under a long-term indexed contract (prices vary with global benchmarks).

  • Revenue use: Covers costs, debt repayments, taxes, and contributions to Mozambique's sovereign wealth fund (~USD 200M).

Operations run under tight security due to Cabo Delgado's instability.

Coral Sul FLNG: Operated by Eni: Facts and Figures

Coral Sul FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) is a pioneering offshore LNG project located in the Area 4 block of the Rovuma Basin, offshore northern Mozambique, near the Afungi Peninsula in Cabo Delgado Province. Operated by Eni, through its subsidiary Eni Rovuma Basin (ERB), in collaboration with ExxonMobil, CNPC, ENH, Galp Energia, and KOGAS, this project marks the first FLNG facility in Africa. It leverages the vast natural gas reserves to produce LNG, contributing to Mozambique's emergence as a global energy player. Below are the key facts and figures based on available data up to September 11, 2025.

Ownership and Structure

The Coral South FLNG project in Mozambique's Rovuma Basin is operated by Eni Rovuma Basin (ERB) S.p.A., a joint venture comprising several global energy players: Eni (35.7% indirect interest, operator), ExxonMobil (35.7% indirect interest), CNPC (20%), Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH) (10%), Galp Energia (10%, acquired by ADNOC in May 2024, finalized April 2025), and KOGAS (10%). The project reached its Final Investment Decision (FID) on June 1, 2017, after which construction commenced. Project management is headquartered in Maputo, while the main operations are offshore.

Project Specifications

The Coral South project targets the Coral reservoir within Area 4, estimated to hold 16–18 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas, part of the broader 85 tcf in the block. It is designed to produce 3.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG using a converted Moss-type FLNG vessel measuring 432 meters in length and 65 meters in width, moored in 2,000 meters of water. The facility is equipped with two liquefaction trains, each capable of producing 1.7 mtpa. Gas is sourced from seven subsea wells and processed onboard, with CO2 reinjection employed to reduce emissions.

Financial and Operational Metrics

The total project investment is estimated at $7–8 billion, financed through a mix of international banks and export credit agencies. The hull was built by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in South Korea, while topsides and integration were completed at Saipem's yard in Italy, with the vessel sailing away on June 20, 2022.

Production milestones include first gas on October 6, 2022, and full production of 3.4 mtpa by mid-2023. The project created over 4,000 jobs during construction, with ongoing employment opportunities for local communities during operations.

Recent Developments (as of September 2025)

The Coral South FLNG continues to produce 3.4 mtpa, delivering its first LNG cargo in December 2022 to BP. Operations have navigated security challenges in Cabo Delgado, with stability maintained through collaboration with Mozambican forces and private security teams. The project has also achieved a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity compared to conventional LNG operations, supporting Eni's broader decarbonization goals. LNG is exported to Asian markets, including China and India, as well as Europe, under long-term sales agreements.

Economic and Regional Impact

The project generates substantial revenue for Mozambique, with ENH receiving dividends that contribute to national development. Since 2017, more than $1 billion has been invested in local infrastructure and workforce training, strengthening economic benefits and local capacity in the energy sector.
