Getting your personal documentation right is the single most important prerequisite for smooth entry into Mozambique. Requirements vary depending on nationality (particularly SADC citizens versus others) and travel companions (especially when traveling with minors). Get it wrong, and you'll be turned away at the border – no matter how far you've driven.
Here's everything you need to know about the mandatory personal documentation for entering Mozambique.
1. Passport
Possession of a valid passport is mandatory for all travelers.
Validity Requirements
The sources cite different – but consistently strict – requirements for passport validity:
- Your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond your intended return date from the date of entry into Mozambique.
- An alternative requirement, particularly for South African passport holders, is validity of at least 30 days beyond the planned return date.

Blank Pages
Your passport must contain at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. For passport holders requiring a visa, at least three blank pages are often recommended.
Stamping Procedure
It is absolutely mandatory to have your passport stamped at immigration (Migração). Never skip this step or assume it's optional.
Security Precaution
Travelers should always carry certified copies of their passport and driver's license and keep the originals stored securely. Losing your original passport in a foreign country creates serious complications – protect it.
2. Visa Requirements and Length of Stay
Visa requirements depend heavily on nationality and purpose of travel.
Visa Exemption for SADC Citizens
Holders of South African (SA) passports and most passports from Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states do not require a visa for tourist stays of up to 30 days.
Business Travel (SA): Since May 2023, the visa requirement for South African business travelers was also eliminated for stays of 30 days.
Visa Required for Other Nationalities
All other nationalities generally require a visa.
Visa on Arrival (VOA): Visas on arrival are available at most international airports and major land borders (such as Lebombo/Ressano Garcia and Kosi Bay/Ponta do Ouro).
Strong Recommendation: Despite the possibility of obtaining VOA, it is strongly recommended to apply for your visa in advance at an embassy or consulate. This is because the issuance of VOA at smaller border crossings is not guaranteed. Don't gamble with your trip.
Visa-Free Entry (Other Nations)
Citizens of 29 countries (including USA, UK, Canada, EU states) are exempt from visa requirements for tourist or business stays of up to 30 days. These travelers must pay a processing fee of 650 Meticais (approximately US$9-10) upon entry and provide proof of accommodation.
Procedures & Evidence
Tourists may need to present:
- Confirmed hotel reservation or letter of invitation
- Return or onward travel ticket
- Proof of sufficient financial means
Overstaying
The maximum permitted stay is typically 30 days. Overstaying your authorized period results in a fine of US$100 per additional day. That's an expensive mistake – mark your calendar carefully.
3. Driver's License
Every driver must possess a valid driver's license.
Acceptance
South African driver's licenses are accepted in Mozambique. South African licenses are valid in all SADC states.
Non-English Licenses
If your driver's license is not issued in English, you must present a certified written translation.
International Driver's License
Holders of other passports may require an international driver's license. An international driver's license is generally recommended regardless of nationality.
Long-term Stays
For stays exceeding six months, an international or Mozambican driver's license is required.
4. Traveling with Minors
Entry of children (under 18 years) is subject to strict regulations designed to prevent child abduction and human trafficking. This is where many travelers run into serious problems.
Unabridged Birth Certificate (UBC)
The UBC (or equivalent official document) is mandatory for all minors traveling with an adult and is classified as "Very Important". This isn't a suggestion – it's an absolute requirement.
Parental Consent
If a minor is traveling with only one parent or unaccompanied, a written consent statement from the absent parent(s) is required.
Language Requirement: The Common Pitfall
Here's where many families get caught out: For entry into Mozambique, the parental consent document must be notarized and written entirely in Portuguese. This language requirement is a common reason for rejection at the border.
Don't show up with an English consent letter and assume you can translate it on the spot. It won't work. Get the Portuguese translation done and notarized before you leave home.
5. Health Documentation
Health compliance certificates may be required at borders.
Yellow Fever Vaccination (YF)
A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory if the traveler is arriving from a country with yellow fever risk or transiting through such an airport with a transit time exceeding 12 hours.
Consequence of Non-Compliance: If you cannot present the certificate at the port of entry, you must be vaccinated at your own expense. This creates delays, costs money, and is entirely avoidable with proper planning.
Additional Vaccinations
Vaccinations against typhus, hepatitis A & B, tetanus, and polio are recommended (though not mandatory).
6. Currency Declaration and Fees
While not travel documents per se, financial documentation and formalities matter.
Cash Declaration
Travelers carrying US$5,000 or more (or the equivalent in other currencies) must declare these amounts to customs upon entry using the "Declaration of entry of foreign currency" form.
Immigration Fee
Regardless of visa exemption, a mandatory processing fee is charged by immigration authorities upon entry to Mozambique. For SA passport holders, this is approximately R17.50 per person.
