From affordable public transport to convenient private options, getting around is accessible; however, it does require some local know-how. This guide will cover the main modes of transport, their costs, safety tips, and practical advice for efficiently exploring Maputo.

Chapas (Minibuses)

Chapas are the backbone of Maputo's public transport system, providing a cheap and authentic means of traveling between neighborhoods such as Baixa, Polana Cimento, and Costa do Sol. These privately operated minibuses follow fixed routes, typically starting from hubs like the Mercado Central in Baixa. They are easily recognizable by their white or yellow color and often crowded interiors.

Fares for chapas range from 5 to 15 Mozambican Meticais (MZN), equivalent to approximately $0.08 to $0.24 USD as of 2025, depending on the distance traveled. Payment is made in cash directly to the conductor. An advantage of chapas is their affordability and wide availability, connecting key areas including downtown, the coastal Avenida Marginal, and suburbs like Sommerschield. However, they can often be overcrowded, leaving limited space for luggage, and their routes may be confusing for newcomers. It is a good idea to ask locals or the conductor to confirm your destination.

To enhance your experience, carry small MZN notes for payment, as change may be limited. It's best to avoid peak hours (between 7 and 9 AM, and 4 and 6 PM) for a less cramped and more comfortable ride. Learning fundamental Portuguese phrases such as "para aqui" (stop here) can be helpful for communicating with drivers.

Taxis

Taxis serve as a more comfortable and flexible option for getting around Maputo, especially for nighttime travel or trips to less accessible areas like Triunfo. Licensed taxis generally feature yellow or green colors and can be found at stands near locations such as the Polana Shopping Center or various hotels. Additionally, you can book taxis via popular apps like MozTaxi. Unmarked "private" taxis also operate, but these typically require fare negotiation before the journey.

Taxi fares start at 200–300 MZN ($3–$5 USD) for short trips, while longer journeys—such as traveling from Baixa to Costa do Sol—can cost between 500 and 800 MZN ($8–$12 USD). It's important to agree on the price beforehand, as meters are rare in Maputo.

The key advantages of using taxis include their safety and reliability, particularly after dark . However, they are more expensive than public transport and can be subject to traffic congestion,. To avoid overcharging, use licensed taxis or reputable apps, and always negotiate fares clearly.

Tuk-Tuks (Rickshaws) - txopelas

Tuk-tuks, or "txopelas," are three-wheeled motorized rickshaws that are popular for short trips within neighborhoods like Baixa and Polana Cimento. These vehicles can typically be hailed on the spot in busy areas like markets or along Avenida Samora Machel, accommodating 2 to 3 passengers.

Fares usually vary between 50 and 150 MZN ($0.80 to $2.40 USD) for short distances, but prices are negotiable. One major advantage of tuk-tuks is their ability to navigate through traffic, making them ideal for moving quickly through downtown streets. They provide a fun and open-air experience, offering a unique way to see the city. However, they are not suitable for longer distances or rainy weather and have limited luggage space.

Be sure to confirm the fare before starting your ride to avoid disputes, and hold on tight, as the journey may be bumpy on uneven roads.

Public Buses -  machinabombo

Public buses, known locally as "machinabombo," are a key mode of transport in Maputo, operated by the Maputo Metropolitan Transport Agency (AMT) alongside private cooperatives. The fleet is small, with around 35 full-size buses, supplemented by private operators.

Challenges for Visitors

Visitors may face overcrowded and poorly maintained buses, leading to long queues and safety concerns. Because of these issues, it's advised that tourists avoid using them. Route information may be unclear, and navigating the system can be difficult for non-Portuguese speakers. For safer and more flexible options, chapas, taxis, and tuk-tuks are recommended.

Walking

Maputo's compact downtown and scenic avenues make walking an excellent option for exploring neighborhoods  Sommerchield,  Polana Cimento etc. Walking is free and offers the best opportunity to soak in the city's colonial architecture, jacaranda-lined streets, and vibrant street life. While it is generally safe to walk during the day in popular areas , it's advisable to avoid walking alone at night, particularly in less busy places.

Car Rentals

Renting a car provides the independence needed to explore not just Maputo but also nearby areas like Catembe, Marracuene or Matola. Car rentals are available through agencies at Maputo International Airport and downtown. For suburban or coastal roads, 4x4 vehicles are recommended.

Daily rates for car rentals generally range from 2,500 to 5,000 MZN ($40 to $80 USD), excluding fuel and insurance. The convenience of having a car allows you to visit more distant neighborhoods like Costa do Sol or Triunfo or coastal restaurants along Avenida Marginal .

However, driving in Maputo can be challenging due to traffic congestion and potholes. Additionally, parking can be limited in Baixa, requiring you to pay local "car watchers" between 10 and 20 MZN to monitor your vehicle. When renting a car, carry an International Driving Permit and verify your rental insurance coverage while avoiding driving at night due to poor road lighting and safety concerns.

Bicycles and Scooters

While less common, bicycles and electric scooters are emerging transportation options in Maputo, particularly in flatter coastal areas like Costa do Sol. Some hotels or tour operators offer bike rentals, and scooter apps may be available in tourist zones.

Renting a bike typically costs between 300 and 600 MZN ($5 to $10 USD) per day, while scooter rates vary by app. Riding these modes of transport allows for great exploration along Avenida Marginal's beach front or quieter streets in Sommerschield. They are both environmentally friendly and budget-conscious options.

However, there is limited infrastructure for cycling and they are not ideal for busy avenues . When cycling, be sure to wear helmets and stay on less congested roads, locking bikes securely when parked to deter theft.
